Following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's announcement that Canada would impose a 25% retaliatory tariff on U.S. goods, U.S. President Donald Trump responded by threatening to impose even higher tariffs on Canada, further intensifying the global trade war.

U.S. stocks fared poorly on Tuesday as a result. The DJIA tumbled as much as 843 points during the session, while nearly recovering its losses in the final half-hour before plummeting again in a late sell-off, ultimately closing down 670 points, or 1.6%, at 42,520. This marked a slide of nearly 1,320 points over Monday and Tuesday combined.

The S&P 500 Index dropped 71 points, or 1.2%, closing at 5,778, while the Nasdaq Composite was on a bumpy ride, briefly gaining over 130 points before finishing down 65 points, or 0.4%, at 18,285.

Among the "Magnificent Seven" tech stocks, Alphabet (GOOG.US) and Nvidia (NVDA.US) were the top gainers, rising over 2% and 1%, respectively, helping to lift the Nasdaq into positive territory. Tesla (TSLA.US) was the weakest, though its decline moderated by the close, ending down 4.4%.

Separately, CKH HOLDINGS (00001.HK) plans to sell 80% of Hutchison Port Holdings to a BlackRock-TiL consortium for USD14.2 billion. CKH ADR (CKHUY.US) surged 17% at the close.
